Show me the Money

Joost

There are three basic ways of keeping score in a Victory-point game:

  • Pen and paper - usually when the score is calculated at the end of the game.

  • Scoretrack - when points are calculated throughout the game, they only really increase, and players don't trade in these points.

  • Money - you gain the points during play, but you also trade with it.

You also have lots of games with money, but where money isn't the currency of Victory points.

So lots of games provide coins of some sort. Non-deluxe versions generally have cardboard coins that you press out when you first play.

Cardboard money is a little dull. Money is by its very nature fungible - usable across different games.

You could buy tokens...but that costs mo...

So instead I use real coins. 3 different colours in a nice chunky size.

British 2p pieces for copper, American and Canadian Quarters for silver, and old Canadian Loonies (dollars) for gold(ish).

A bit of a scrub with vinegar and they came out pretty shiny.

I found them in the backs of drawers, old suitcases etc. Change from foreign trips. And the bonus is, that if I no longer need them for games, then they're still good as actual money!

I also had some costume jewels in case we need something chunkier...

And then chunkiest of all... rocks! Just driveway gravel...

(This was perfect for upgrading "Akropolis", more on that little gem another time!)
