The Splendor of Century Spice Road

Joost

Both these games are bare-bone engine builders.

Use cards to get coins to get better cards from the board to get more coins till you can afford enough of the best cards to end the game.

Both are at the lighter/easier to learn end of the hobby. Quick teach and easy enough for new players to understand ("Grok"?) what they should do.

Splendor is the better known game. Maybe people like jewels more than spices?

However, when I had a clear-out once, I felt I should only keep one and had to choose.  I went for Century Spice Road.

It was a gut response. Maybe just happier games?

I  think, it was faster turns, more variety in the engines, a bit more forgiving of bad early choices. I also prefer cards to tiles. They’re just…bigger!

Also it allowed me a little upgrading. I printed out a game mat onto a few A3s that I glued together.

(My A3 file is in the resources section of my site)

I also found some small golden metal bowls to replace the plastic that come with the game, and sprinkled extra (and slightly off-colour) cubes into them to up the luxury. Give them lids and it speeds set-up.

It’s a great little game.
